Abstract
The surface area of the peritoneum is relatively large and approximately equal to that of the skin. Perflubron, which is recently developed, has the highest solubility for oxygen among perfluorochemical substances. I have undertaken two experimental studies to assess the possibility of increasing the arterial and venus oxygen tension in mild hypoxia rats, by means of peritoneal perfusion with Perflubron. In the Experiment 1, I changed intraperitoneal pressure and circulatory flow of Perflubron consequently. Significant increases of PO2 in both artery and central vein were obtained especially with low intraperitoneal pressure. In the Experiment 2, 240-min continuous perfusion of Perflubron in the fixed intraperitoneal pressure and circulatory flow was performed for evaluating the effects to the hemodynamics. Significant increases in arterial and venus PO2 and significant decreases in arterial and venus PCO2 were shown with stable hemodynamics during the 240 min perfusion period. Peritoneal oxygenation would be effective in the treatment of some forms of respiratory failure, for example intra-tracheal burns.
