Ti-6Al-4V alloys were subjected to peening with fine titanium nitride (TiN) particles under ambient conditions to form a surface-modified layer containing TiN to improve their tribological properties. A TiN particle transferred layer with high hardness was formed on the Ti-6Al-4V surface. Ball-on-disk reciprocating sliding friction and wear tests were conducted on the modified surface. The absolute values and fluctuations of the friction coefficient of Ti-6Al-4V alloys were significantly reduced by TiN fine particle peening (TiN-FPP), and the area where wear occurred was reduced. These results suggest that TiN-FPP is an effective approach for improving the tribological properties of Ti-6Al-4V alloys.
