Abstract
As high temperature at the meiosis frequently induces sterility in wheat, we analyzed the varietal differences in seed setting rates in response to high temperature in order to develop wheat cultivars suitable for tropical regions. We sowed the seeds of 109 cultivars from a world-wide collection four times (at the end of October, at the end of February, in early May and in early July) in the experimental field of the Tropical Agriculture Research Center. Tsukuba (36°N Iat.). Air temperature in the area of origin of each cultivar was significantly related to the seed setting rate in the treatments where the meiosis stage coincided with the period of high temperature.
