Abstract
Corn mint (M, arevensis L.) is wildly diffused over northern hemisphere. The number of chromosomes of this species is reported to be 12, 54, 60, 64, 72, 92 and 0.6 in somatic cells bv. several authors. So it is supposed that genome differentiates intraspecifically. The authors crossed a race of the corn mint of European origin (2n=72 and n=36) with the Japanese mint of Eastern origin (2 n=96 and n=48) in order to learn the phylogenetic relationships between them and also to see if it is possible of introduce excelling characters of the corn mint into the Japanese mint which has been cultivated in Japan.
