Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the direct effects of going out to meaningful places on the selective and subjective well-being of local elderly persons with impairments caused by stressful life events. A survey was conducted with random older adults living in the Sakata City of Yamagata Prefecture (N = 400), and 222 effective responses were analyzed. A two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) indicat-ed the following: (1) No significant interaction between stressful life events and going out to meaningful places. (2) Significant main effects of going out to meaningful places and a “decline of subjective feelings of health,” a “decline in the feeling of definite aims,” and “bereavement of the spouse.” It is concluded that recognizing stressful life events by people going out to meaningful places increased the direct effect of subjective well-being, regardless of the degree of experience.
