Abstract

A single radial immunodiffusion method for RBP assay was developed. The normal values of serum RBP in young, male subjects were found to be 43±9μg/ml (M±SD). Serum RBP levels were as low as 33±6μ9/ml (M±SD) in 16aged subjects (average81years) who were assessed as controls of patients with“ltai-ltai”disease.
In 8cases (27.6%), of29patients with established“ltai-ltai”disease, serum RBP levels were significantly elevated to a range of 61to105μg/ml. Serum RBP levels were significantly correlated to RBP/PA molar ratio (r=0.775, P<0.001) serum urea N (r=0.695, P<0.001) and serum creatinine (r=0.534, P<0.001) in the patients and their relatives. These results reveal that an elevation of serum RBP levels in some patients with “ltai-ltai” disease (tubular proteinuria) may indicate an additional change of renal glomerular function.
There is no evidence that the vitamin A content in the blood is depleted in these patients, regardless of a long continuous urinary loss of RBP.
