Abstract

 As the aging of sewerage pipeline facilities accelerates, infrastructure managers urgently need to improve management systems. The purpose of this study is to compare and to analyze the differences in the status, issues, and strategies of municipalities, namely being in charge of sewage system administration, and to identify key points for improvement in the future. Using six indicators which relate to the efficiency of sewerage management, we classified all municipalities in Japan into six groups and implimented detailed survey in nine sample municipalities of each group. The study picked up the serious situation of maintenance system of sewer pipelines, especially the problems of quantity and quality of technical staff in municipalies, and discussed the required measures of improvement for the future.
