Abstract

The city of Kitami, Hokkaido, Japan was merged with one city and three towns in 2006, and has the largest area ranking in Hokkaido area and 4th in Japan. The total number of bridges, viaducts and functional culverts over 2.0 m in length, became more than doubled to 524 bridges compared to before the merger. For financial reasons, it was considered that city officials would be responsible for the bridge inspection of smaller bridges less than 10m long in the future and effective and efficient inspection methods need to be considered rapidly. In this study, an index to evaluate the performance of bridge structures was considered focusing on 47 PC slab girder bridges and 8 RC slab bridges with less than 10m in length. As a result of study, it was shown that index based on the relationship between measured and theoretical deformation facilitates the relative comparison of different bridges. Also, the relationship between measured deformation and degree of decrease in Young's modulus can be seen at a glance, making it possible to estimate performance based on quantitative data.
