Abstract

In this study, a new testing method was developed with the aim of evaluating the rutting resistance of asphalt pavements including the upper subbase. A fatigue testing procedure was examined using specimens in which asphalt mixtures were placed on a granular subbase. Tests were conducted with subbase material gradation and degree of compaction, binder type of asphalt mixtures, and test temperature as parameters. The results indicated that the rutting resistance of asphalt pavements tends to decrease when the gradation of the subbase material becomes finer or when the degree of subbase compaction decreases. These findings suggest that the proposed method enables laboratory evaluation of the influence of granular subbase layer conditions on the rutting resistance of asphalt pavements.
