Abstract
The study revealed the changes in possibility of mutual access between all prefectural capitals in Japan. We considered five points of time, since the Meiji era. In this process, the concept of the possible staying time has been referred to, instead of commonly used indices, to take into account the feature of inter city mutual access, such as frequent services and conveniences of transfer.
As the result, it can be noted that the differences in inter city accessibility between developed districts and those not had apparently widened, during the ages of development, construction and other improvements in transportation facilities. Also, it shows that as these improvements in transportation facilities expand nationwide, the differences in accessibility tend to diminish.
