Abstract
Strain rate controlled cyclic triaxial test was introduced as a new testing procedure for cyclic shear test on soil in this study. A series of tests was performed on a remoulded marine clay, a loose sand and a decomposed granite soil “Masado”. The results were compared with those from the current stress controlled cyclic triaxial tests. More stable behaviour was observed in the strain rate controlled tests especially in clay as a rate dependency material, loose sand behaving strain softening and Masado as a crushable soil comparing with that from the stress controlled tests. Further, the effect of strain rate on cyclic strength of clay was investigated applying the various rate of axial strain.
