Abstract
This paper deals with a study of special spacer with damping device developed for suppressing wake galloping in tandem cables of cable-stayed bridges. Numerical calculations demonstrating the damping characteristics due to the installation of the proposed damper are presented for the tandem cable model with the length of 100m and 200m. It was ascertained that the structural damping characteristics with this type of damper for the out of phase cables would be very dependent on the torsional rigidity of the cable. Cable vibration tests on a full-scale bridge were also performed to verify the effectiveness of the proposed damping device.
