Abstract
Recently, it comes to be considered that disaster mitigation by residents’ response is important. One of the residents’ educational tools for disaster mitigation is a hazard map. Now, a variety of hazard maps have been produced by many municipalities. However, some problems concerning residents understanding of flood hazard maps are identified. In this study, issues of hazard maps from the viewpoint of characteristics of residents’ understanding of risk information and production by municipalities are examined, for example flood hazard maps. Moreover, the ideal way of effective use of the hazard maps as the tool for the risk communication is suggested.
