Abstract

There is cold water stored in the underground space of the Oya area (the site of the Oya stone quarry) in Utsunomiya City. In this study, monitoring and model experiments were carried out in order to clarify the distribution and the mechanism on how the water was stored in the space underground. As a result of the investigation, the stored water partially filled the underground space and was in low temperature (under 10 deg.C), but many of these underground spaces were completely submerged (83% of the whole). The mechanism of the water being cold is considered to be a combination of a sensible heat process in which air from outside is being cooled in the winter in which flows into the underground space and becomes a cooling source and latent heat process in which water temperature lowers by evaporation of the stored water. From the result of the model experiments it showed that if the humidity of the air flowing into the underground space is low, then the temperature of the water decreases (correlation coefficient : R = 0.69 - 0.75).
