Abstract
Drought on the Australian continent, which causes heavy damage to the agricultural and the livestock industry, has a typical occurrence frequency of once every decade. However, in recent year, it was generated in 1995/95, 2002/03, 2006/07 and 2007/08. Particularly, the drought in 2006/07 was extremely severe for cereal production. Hence, a drought has become the serious issue in the Australia now. The Coupled Land and Vegetation Data Assimilation System (CLVDAS) has been developed as a drought analysis tool and was adopted to the research product in the JAXA GCOM-W project. The hydrological and ecological valuables over the Australia were simulated by this system in the framework of the Data Integration and Analysis System Program (DIAS-P). In this study, we calculated the soil moisture content for the land surface and the root zone, the water stress factor and the leaf area index using the CLVDAS and they were analyzed using the standard anomaly index. In consequence, we showed the possibility for drought prediction by the output of this system over the Australia.
