Abstract
This paper presents an experimental study on the fluid-sediment dynamics around a group of Bandalling structures which consist of a permeable lower part and an impermeable upper part. The Bandalling structure is a kind of hybrid groyne coming from an indigenous technical knowledge in the Indian subcontinent. The experiments are conducted on a movable bed with suspended sediment transport under both non-submerged and submerged conditions. The results indicate that Bandalling structures share some common hydraulic and morphological features of those of impermeable and permeable groynes. The vertical component of the flow velocity near the Bandalling structures plays an important role in the suspended sediment transport and the bed deformation process. Significant differences are observed on the flow structure and sediment transport characteristics between submerged and non-submerged conditions.
