This study introduces the background of the introduction of “Omoyai Taxi, ” a ride-sharing taxi service with real-time on-demand allocation system that began operating in Arao City, Kumamoto Prefecture, in October 2020. Using one year of reservation log data, we continuously analyzed the actual conditions of use and operation, user evaluations, competition with existing public transportation services, and comparison of operational efficiency with conventional taxi services. The results showed that the number of users of this service has doubled, that it is a complementary service to buses, that high frequency users have a fixed destination and time of day, and that CO2 emissions and fuel costs can be reduced because the total distance traveled is shorter than that of conventional taxis.
