Abstract

Central Nippon Expressway Company Limited has been conducting “Expressway Renewal Project” in various regions. A previous study conducted by the authors revealed the bottleneck and the traffic capacity during two-way traffic restrictions. However, the conditions under which a bottleneck is determined and the factors that affect traffic capacity have not been clarified.

This study, to clarify these conditions and factors, adds a sample of construction sections, analyses the characteristics of bottleneck locations, and develops a model for estimating traffic capacity during two-way traffic restrictions. The results of the analysis revealed that the bottleneck may be influenced by the ratio of merging, sag order, and lane shift conditions, and that the traffic capacity was affected by the bottleneck, the length of the construction section, the rate of heavy vehicles, and the vertical grade.
