Abstract

In this study, field investigations and 3D seismic response analysis were conducted on a skewed bridge that collapsed during the February 2023 earthquake in southern Turkey. The skewed bridge had pad-type rubber bearings, no anchor bar connecting the superstructure and substructure as is common in Japan, and displacement-limiting blocks on the acute-angle side of the bridge, which was severely damaged. It was concluded that the bridge fell due to the rotational behavior of the main girder caused by the collision of the main girder with the abutment due to strong seismic motion. Seismic response analysis was also conducted using the observation records near the damaged bridge as input. As a result, the impact of the main girder on the abutment breastwall and the rotational behavior of the main girder were reproduced, and the support area of the main girder was found to cause the bridge to unseat from the acute angle side of the abutment.
