Abstract

Recently, the number of community centers that serve as bases for supporting community development and the number of employees who support activities is on the decline, and there is a need to secure human resources. However, according to a public opinion survey conducted by the Cabinet Office of the Government of Japan, rewards that come from within the individual, such as the pleasure of working and a sense of accomplishment, may influence work motivation. In this study, we focused on intrinsic motivation and aimed to clarify the reasons for continued work motivation among community center employees who are supporters of community development. As a result of the interviews, we obtained narratives about autonomy, competence, and relationships related to the continuation of work motivation. In particular, relationships can be categorized as “being able to have a conversation,” “being able to experience the expansion of relationships,” and “finding a role model.” Civic center employees in particular were found to have intrinsic motivation that leads to continued work motivation when relationships are enhanced.
