Abstract
 A formula derived using the conservation of momentum for the tsunami wave force acting on the walls of houses is proposed. The formula is expressed as a function of inundation depth h, Froude number, Fr, and the direction of the tsunami propagation, θ. Considering the probability density functions of structural durability, R, and tsunami forces, F, the probability of houses sustaining damage was evaluated by integrating the probability function of Z=R-F from -∞ to 0. The probabilities estimated using the present method were compared with observed data and showed good agreement.
