Abstract

Tidal flats have many beneficial features such as water purification and habitat for organisms. In recent years, it is also expected that they will play new roles, such as creating blue carbon. Sand is required as a basic material for the creation of tidal flats and shoals. But the use of natural sand for the construction of a tidal flat may cause new environmental damage, so alternative materials must be developed. In this study, the performance of the molten slag has been studied through comparative experiments to create artificial tidal flats in a water tank using different materials. And artificial tidal flat creation in a real sea area using molten slag was conducted. The results of the study showed no significant effects on water quality, such as pH. There was no difference in the death rate of the added Manila clams(Ruditapes philippinarum). This indicates that molten slag has potential as a material for tidal flat.
