Abstract
We carried out the model experiments of seismic retrofitting methods with soil improvement piles for the leaning-type retaining wall to confirm the reinforcement effect and mechanism by using a shaking table.
Experimental results reveal that the method of soil improvement piles set into the embankment behind the wall is not effective to rocking and slipping collapse, but the method is effective to preventing from collapse of embankments behind the piles. Furthermore, the method of the piles set into embankments connecting to the top of the walls is very effective to all mode collapse by the united action of walls, soil improvement piles, and embankments.
Experimental data shows that subgrade reaction of soil improvement piles resists to seismic active earth pressure, inertia force of walls. Especially the front and bottom of piles, and shaft friction of piles resists to that.
