Abstract
Carbon fiber reinforced carbon (C/C) composites were made from multi-layer fabrics which were woven with pitch-based carbon fiber rovings and coaltar pitch matrix. The relationship between the fabric structure and mechanical properties of the multi-layer fabric C/C composite was investigated by tensile, bending, shear and compression tests. The properties were compared with those of plain woven cloth C/C composite. The result are summarized as follows. For the tensile test, it was found that the stress-strain curve of multi-layer fabric C/C composìte was linear, while that of plain woven cloth C/C composite was nonlinear. Consequently, tensile strength of the multi-layer fabric C/C composite was higher than that of plain woven cloth C/C composite. It was clearly shown by the observation of the specimen after shear test that the multi-layer fabric C/C composites have high resistance to the interlaminar shear fracture. From the results of three point bending test for various span-to-hight ratio, it was shown that shear strength of the multi-layer fabric C/C composite is higher than that of plain woven cloth C/C composite, while for bending strength, the relalion is reversed.
