Kidney transplants require both surgical and medical care to acquire maximum success for recipients. In living related kidney transplants, the role of nephrologists is more important in preoperative evaluation and postoperative follow-up in donors as well as recipients. In kidney transplants, cooperation of nephrologists will give positive impacts especially on aspects shown below. 1) Information about kidney transplant for patients awaiting dialysis, 2) Increase of numbers of preemptive kidney transplants, 3) Preoperative evaluation for candidates of living related kidney transplant, 4) Medical care for kidney recipients in chronic outpatient follow-up, 5) Preoperative evaluation for candidates of living kidney donation, 6) Long term follow-up of living kidney donors, 7) Regular checkup of patients with end-stage kidney disease on active waiting list for cadaveric kidney transplant. When urologists and nephrologists cooperate in kidney transplant service, numbers of kidney transplant will increase and quality of service provided for both kidney donors and recipients will be improved. We discuss about this based on our own experience.
