Abstract
After The 2011 Off the Pacific Coast of Tohoku Earthquake occurred in Japan, increment of leakage from transverse joints of several concrete gravity dams was reported. To speculate the cause of this phenomenon, similar cases at the time of or after the past major earthquakes were investigated. In addition, to estimate the seismic effect on each transverse joint, both a numerical analysis using FE model of a typical gravity dam and an analysis of microtremor measurement data obtained at an actual dam were conducted. These studies revealed that there are some specific locations where seismic stress on a transverse joint is likely to be concentrated and the level of stress varies depending on restraint condition of transverse joints.
