On September 6, 2018, the Hokkaido Eastern Iburi Earthquake occurred, recording a maximum seismic intensity of 7. Azuma Dam, located approximately 12 km from the epicenter, suffered extensive damage, including damage to the spillway, sediment accumulation, cracks in the control bridge abutment, and the collapse and burial of the intake facility control room, although no cracks were found in the dam body. Therefore, Azuma Dam was restored through a direct disaster restoration project. Restoration work and test impoundments were carried out based on a schedule that took into account the early assessment of the damage around the dam body, ensuring discharge function, and implementing multiple construction projects simultaneously. The dam began operation in fiscal year 2024. This article reports on these efforts.
