Abstract

Corrosion resistance of cast dental Ti-Mn alloys containing between 5 and 20 mass% of Mn in solutions specified in ISO 10271 was investigated. Anodic polarization curves of Ti-Mn alloys displayed a wide passive region and low passivation current density across the different compositions. The behavior of the Ti-Mn alloys was similar to that of Ti. Small amounts of Ti and Mn ions were released during static immersion tests. The amount of Ti ions released from the different compositions of Ti-Mn alloys was constant at approximately 1.5 μg/cm2. In contrast, the amounts of Mn ions released from the different compositions of Ti-Mn alloys demonstrated a linear relationship with the mass% of the Mn component of the alloy. However, the highest amount of Mn ions that was released from the alloy with 20 mass% of Mn, was very small (0.5 μg/cm2 or less). Ti-Mn alloys exhibited corrosion resistance comparable to that of Ti.
