Abstract
No conclusions have not yet been reached regarding the effects of CT on the HD-Pt of renal osteodystrophy (ROD). We have continuously administered CT to 28 stable HD-Pt of 5 years to study the effects of CT on prevention and improvement of ROD. In addition to the blood examinations, x-rays of the second metacarpals of the most affected hand were taken to evaluate the bone condition by the microdensitometry (MD) method.
The blood test showed no change in Ca in all cases, a decrease in P to its normal value, and some decrease in CaxP in the cases with over 6mg/dl of P. MCI and ΔGSmin, being 0.45±0.05 and 1.92±0.46, respectively, at the beginning, were not changed throughout the course of administration. On the other hand, ΔGSmax showed an increasing tendency gradually from 3.06±0.48 to 3.27±0.53, and also ∑GS/D increased from 2.22±0.40 to 2.35±0.41. As to the bone improvement according to the evaluation criteria by the MD method, improvement of more than the medium degree was observed in 50% of the cases only 6 months after the beginning of administration. Even after 42 months, the rate of improvement (more than the medium) degree was 50%, reaching 75% including improvement of more than a light degree. It is considered that a long-term administration of CT was effective for prevention and improvement of ROD existing in HD-Pt.
