Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate educational advancement with regard to promoting the use of textbooks and notebooks among junior high school students in both classroom and homework environments. It describes an analysis of a case of individual cognitive counseling. In the case described, the counselor utilized a mathematics textbook and asked the student being counseled to explain the learning contents during the counseling sessions in order to make the student understand the content and structure of the textbook and to encourage the use of textbooks spontaneously when she faced impasses while working at home. Through counselling, the student began to use textbooks spontaneously, and her belief about learning changed as she focused more on understanding the meaning of mathematical terms and concepts. In addition, her note-taking style in class also changed: she became more effective in taking notes about the meanings of terms and concepts. By analyzing this case, effective interventions that promote the development of students into independent learners who can utilize textbooks and notebooks are discussed.
