Abstract

Carbon supports were synthesized the heat-treatment of paper processed with methanesulfonic acid, and non-platinum oxygen reduction catalysts were prepared by using a two-step heat-treatment process with a SUS-316 airtight container and a quartz boat. The diffusion limiting current using the catalyst made from toilet paper was higher than those made from the other papers, and the onset potential where ORR current flows (0.1 mA mg−1) improved by approximately 0.02 V compared to that made from the conventional Ketjenblack®. It was revealed that the use of the microwave (MW) method further enhanced the onset potential, achieving 0.909 V vs. RHE.
