Abstract

This research investigates a biomass gasification system for power generation in rural communities of developing countries, using a Uflow biomass gasifier (20 kW) developed at Ashikaga University. Unlike traditional systems that utilize reciprocating or modified diesel engines, which face tar-related issues, this study employs a rotary engine coupled to a generator, avoiding tar-related problems. Woody biomass was used as feedstock, and experiments evaluated system performance at different engine speeds and operational modes. Results showed up to 6 hours of continuous power generation, with fuel consumption rates varying by engine speed, and cold gas efficiency reaching 79.8% at 3200 rpm.
