Abstract

In our hospital, dentists and dental hygienists are affiliated with the Department of Rehabilitation and collaborate with physiatrists, speech therapists, and nurses to care for patients. The subjects are mainly hospitalized patients. In this retrospective survey, we investigated the outcomes of oral screening for inpatients referred to rehabilitation between October 2010 and January 2011. In addition, we examined hospitalized patients who underwent dental intervention between October 2010 and March 2016. With respect to oral screening, dental treatment was necessary in 259 of 404(64%)patients. In those examined for dental intervention, 4,383 patients(2,554 males, 1,829 females, mean age:72±13 years)were detected. Among the 4,383 patients, the underlying disease was respiratory disorders(n=755;17%), cerebrovascular disorders(n=746;17%), and gastrointestinal diseases(n=593;14%), and dental interventions comprised oral hygiene(n=2,668;61%), denture treatment(n=910;21%), mucosal treatment requiring prescription(n=426;10%), operative dentistry(n=212;5%), and tooth extraction(n=145;3%). Based on the results of oral screening, approximately 60% of those referred to rehabilitation required dental intervention. Oral hygiene was the most commonly needed intervention, but the treatments were diverse.
