Abstract
Many abutment teeth of the overdenture were infected with dental caries or periodontal disease because of the difficulty of plaque control and the poor of self-cleansing.However, a few studies have reported the prevention of these diseases. Fluoride hasbeen reported to have antibacterial ability. In addition, highly concentrated fluoride varnish can be kept around the teeth. In this study, we examined the preventive effects ofhigh concentration fluoride varnish on dental caries and periodontal disease of abutmentteeth for overdenture.
The subjects, consisting of 16 patients from 48 to 73 years of age, were allocated atrandom to a test group (6 patients, 14 teeth) or a control group (10 patients, 17 teeth). The test group' s teeth were treated by high concentration fluoride varnish (22, 600ppmF-). In this study, we examined the status of periodontal disease, dental cariesand the number of microorganisms (mutans streptococci, Lactobacilli) in the patient'ssaliva.
There were no extracted teeth in the test group. In contrast, 4 teeth in the controlgroup were extracted because of periodontitis. The CPI code and tooth mobility scoresimproved in the test group (p<0.05). However, there were no significant differencesbetween the groups in the number of microorganisms.
From these results, the regular application of fluoride varnish indicates the effectson improvement periodontal diseases
