Abstract
We conducted a survey to investigate the problems of the transnasal endoscopy in Kumamoto Prefecture. Over 70% of medical facilities in Kumamoto Prefecture put more than 90% of patients under sedation in oral endoscopy. The adoption rate of transnasal endoscopies was 25.7%, which indicates that transnasal endoscopy has spread more than expected. However, only 30% of the facilities which introduced transnasal endoscopy used it actively, and the patients were not very satisfied with this procedure. Furthermore, not even the endoscopists were satisfied with it: only 30% of them answered that they liked to be examined by means of a transnasal endoscope, while the rest opted for oral endoscopy. In Kumamoto Prefecture, transnasal endoscopy was not favored either among patients or among endoscopists. Therefore, it is felt that there is a need to establish a training/campaign program for transnasal endoscopy.
