At gastric cancer screening, we strongly recommend Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) eradication treatment for those who are suspected to be currently infected with H. pylori and have not yet undergone eradication based on a medical interview and imaging diagnosis.
Of 45,993 X-ray examinations, 2,314 referrals were made with a recommendation for eradication. However, the number of responses to referrals was low (919), with successful H. pylori eradication being reported in 535 cases (58.2%). Among these, five cases of early-stage gastric cancer were found.
Of 3,745 endoscopic examinations, eradication was recommended in 169 cases with a referral letter, and 127 cases responded. Of these, 99 (78.0%) underwent successful eradication. The reply rate and eradication success rate were significantly (P<0.01) higher than was the case with x-ray examinations.
In the case of gastric cancer screening that cannot be combined with ABC screening due to cost, it is necessary to attach importance to H. pylori gastritis regardless of age to accurately diagnose H. pylori gastritis, and not only to detect gastric cancer but also to strongly recommend eradication to those who have not yet undergone H. pylori eradication. This is considered an important point for efficient gastric cancer screening in the future.
