This paper describes key points for anterior wall imaging of deformed stomachs. Because the stomach is a mobile hollow organ, its position, shape, and radiographic appearance vary depending on various conditions. The extent of imaging changes particularly depending on the degree of retroflexion of the upper stomach caused by rotation toward the abdominal wall. Therefore, understanding stomach images obtained from a lateral aspect of the body (hereafter referred to as lateral view) is crucial for appropriate imaging.
The effectiveness of the compression cushion can be confirmed using actual lateral views and simulated lateral views from CT scans. In the Gastric X-ray Examination Manual 2025, Revised 3rd Edition, the technique for using the compression cushion is described in detail, and proper application enables high-quality anterior wall imaging. Furthermore, lateral views facilitate understanding of the principles underlying prone double-contrast images and the double-contrast Method II.
In an analysis of X-ray images, resection specimens, and histopathological section images from five cases of gastric cancer, detailed interpretation was achieved using double-contrast Method I, Method II, and compression imaging with adequate barium coating, which depict the characteristics and surface irregularities of the lesion.
