Activity Report of the Research Group for History of Hydrology in Japan

Abstract

In 2023, the International Association of Hydrological Sciences (IAHS), a working group was established to organize the history of the development of hydrology, and began collecting and integrating the history of hydrology from around the world. This research group was established to organize and systematize the history of hydrology in Japan to date and to disseminate the results to the international community through the IAHS working group. The research group organized the process of development of hydrology in Japan and submitted the paper titled“Emergence and developments in hydrology -Suimongaku- in Japan from the late 19th century to 1970”to the Hydrological Sciences Journal. The paper indicated that the rapid introduction and application of hydrology in Japan was accelerated by addressing of water issues, and that after World War II, practical social demands and the influence of the United States led to the systematization of hydrology and the development of its methodology.
