Abstract
Prior research on contents business suggests that business-systems are influenced by developing both technologies of producing contents and media technologies. However, there is little attention paid to the issues how new business-systems are built within developing these technologies and what activities certain firms make to build their business-system. To address this question, we explore the history of the Japanese record industry over 90 years from 1920s to 2000s. The findings are as follows. Emerging new technologies of producing contents causes bottleneck within producing side of industry, while emerging new media technologies causes bottleneck within consuming side. Building business-systems is to eliminate two sides of bottlenecks with the systems activating both new resource and sales channels.
