Abstract
Results of late synovectomy of the knee in 22 patients (28 joints) with rheumatoid arthritis were evaluated by middle- to long-term follow-up study. Out of 28 knees, 16 knees had good to excellent long-term results. Eight knees had good shorts-term results, which turned out to be worse results in the long-term. Three knees had to be replaced by total knee joints due to bad short-term results. One knee was lost to follow-up study. We discuss the indications for open synovectomy with conventional arthroplasty for advanced stages rheumatoid knees from the results of our study. Since total knee arthroplasty has potential risks, especially when performed on young patients, open synovectomy with conventional arthroplasty may be performed unless a large bony defect is present. Considering the unpredictable results of this surgery, informed consent is prerequisite.
