Abstract

Regarding shipping activities on NSR (Northern Sea Route), the shipping based on charter contracts are already conducted, thus the shipping based on the individual goods transport contracts including container shipping is worth focusing upon. While we can see previous studies on carriers’ point of view, less has been studied from shippers’ point of view. This study is aiming at examining future prospects on NSR utilization as well as its challenges, from the interests of shippers. Firstly, the current issues on NSR are reviewed, followed by evaluation of NSR service levels such as lead-times and costs. Then, in order to grasp shippers’ preference on route choice (NSR/Suez Canal), a questionnaire survey is conducted. Based on the information, future prospects of utilization of NSR are examined, under consideration of current and future SCM (Supply Chain Management) practices by shippers.
