Abstract
Impairment of function of the ciliary body was produced in normal albino rabbits by the oral administration of naphthalene. On these animals observations ware then made of the time course of the total vitamin C and sodium contents (both substances choson for the study as actively transported ones) in aqueous of the anterior chamber as well as of the effect of naphthalene on the blood-aqueous barrier following loading with vitamin C to investigate for ventual changes in the function of the blood-aqueous barrier. Whereas naphthalene affects the active transport of vitamin C to a remarkable extent, leading to the development of cataract, it does not exert anyinfluence upon the active transport of sodium. Ouabain apparently alters the active transport of sodium but its effect on the transport index of sodium is modest. From these facts it seems likely that the active transport a cross the blood-aqueous barrier of vitamin C and of sodium is accomplished by entirely different mechanisms.
