Abstract
The occurrence of troublesome behavior involves various psychological and physiological factors, and often makes therapy and countermeasures difficult. Recently, some devices in dementia disease have been reported that permit multi-faceted and more objective information to be obtained. However, there is no report on the prognostic estimation of troublesome behavior. Troublesome behavior in the present investigation considers the amount of burden on the helper and the main reason for hospitalization. These include such things as interruptions of the sleep of others (family or other patients) and wandering. To estimate whether relief might be obtained during hospitalization, a review has been made of the important items of GBS scale. For the survey, a review was made of 47 cases who interrupted the sleep of others, and 42 cases of wandering among 75 cases that excluded 16 “dropouts” within 120 days after hospitalization. The survey was made in the therapeutic ward for senile dementia in a hospital in Hitachi city. Using a statistical analysis system (SAS), with the chisquare test and a multi-variable analytical quantifying theory class-2, factors determining the relief of troublesome behavior were reviewed. In both the interruption of the sleep of others and wandering, location orientation-problems or the GBS scale indicated the greatest contribution. It was clearly found that the patients with location orientation-problems were puzzled even in the patient's own ward or home. The second degree of contribution included different factors that affected relief with respect to interruption of the sleep of others and wandering. The former basically involves mental functions, and the much milder symptoms present a higher probability for relief. Prognosis of the latter involves motor-functions in addition to the mental functions. The lower involvement of motor-function allowed better relief of wandering. During hospitalization, application of the GBS scale suggested the possibility for estimation of prognosis for the troublesome behavior. Thus, evaluation of location might orientation be very important in relation to mental functions.
