Abstract
We started RF Hyperthermia from April, 1985. Since it is often difficult to apply heat to a deep-seated malignant tumor in the abdominal cavity, we welcomed the development of a new device. We have conducted clinical trials of hyperthermia using the Jasmin 3.1000. This device, developed by Odam Co. of France, is a RF capacitive heating device with 3 electrodes. The frequency is 13.56MHz, and it has 3 generators each with a maximum output of 600W. We report the characteristics of this device and the results of clinical trials. Metastatic liver tumor (11 cases), hepatoma (6 cases), and abdominal tumor (5 cases) were used as the subjects in clinical trials. The responses of metastatic liver tumors were PR, 2 cases; NC, 7 cases ; and PD, 2 cases. The mean survival time was 12.2 months. In cases of hepatoma the responses were: NC, 5 cases; and PD, 1 case. Mean survival time was 17.3 months. Responses of abdominal tumors were: PR, 1 case; and NC, 4 cases. Mean survival time was 7.2 months. To the present time, no serious side effects have been found and heating has been relatively good.
