Abstract
Five patients with severe acute pancreatitis who had undergone continuous hemodiaf filtration (CHDF) were subjected to a study on the effectiveness of CHDF and timing of surgery for the disease. Of the five patients, three were treated conservatively and the remaining two, surgically. In this study these two patient groups were compared for body temperature, serum concentration of IL6, and other blood data. The serum concentrations of IL6 decreased immediately after CHDF, and the effectiveness of the removal of cytokines was recognized. Generally, an indication of surgical treatment for a patient with serious acute pancreatitis depends on the presence of infection. Our cases which needed surgical treatment revealed sudden rises of body temperature and WBC, and a problem in the decrease of serum IL6 with CHDF. The measurements of body temperature, WBC and serum IL6 concentrations can predict the presence of infection early and could greatly contribute to the timing of surgical treatment.
