Abstract
A concept of the optimal vascular structure was elucidated by Murray (1926) and Kamiya (1970). In this paper, a hypothesis by which the development of the optimal vascular structure is introduced and explained, i. e., the vascular wall grows if the tension gradient in the vascular wall produced by intravascular pressure gradient exceeds the biological constant. Development and compensatative function of a collateral circulation can also be explained by the hypothesis.
