Abstract

We surveyed discarded PET bottles with leftover contents at J. F. Oberlin University.  Leftovers of beverage occur intentionally or unintentionally, and 10g or more leftover is considered intentional.  23% of discarded PET bottles contain leftovers, 8% of discarded PET bottles contain 50g or more leftover.  Fruit beverages have a high percentage of intentional leftover compared with water or tea.  The average quantity of leftover in 500mL PET bottles with leftover contents is 55.9g/bottle and the average quantity of leftover in all discarded 500mL PET bottles is 12.8g/bottle, which corresponds to 47% of average vacant PET bottle weight.  27% students have an experience to discard PET bottles with leftover contents.  Students who never condider if he/she can drink all have high experience rate.  The reasons of leftover (multiple answer) are “Because I am full” is 56%, “Because it’s too much to carry” is 41%.
