Abstract

While it is important to understand the structure of the international resource cycle of automobiles, it is not easy to calculate and compare the number of used vehicles exported by each country. The challenges in calculating the number of used vehicles exported by the EU are the uncertainty of the number of vehicles exported to the EU region and the reliability of the trade statistics figures. Another challenge is that the range of items that are classified as new or used vehicles differs from country to country. The figures for the EU and the U.K. are estimated by correcting for possible outliers and multiplying the percentage of used vehicles by destination for items that are not classified as new or used vehicles. In total for the 10 years from 2010 to 2019, it is safe to say that Japan, the EU, and the U.S. have similar levels of used vehicle exports. A further challenge is to capture the number of used vehicles exported by EU countries to the EU region.
