Abstract

The present study is performed to increase the fatigue limit, σw1 which is determined from the occurrence of minute cracks at the press-fitted portion. A number of rotating bending fatigue tests are carried out on 50 mm-dia press-fitted shaft assemblies. The results obtained are as follows. (1) In the case of press-fitted assemblies where the hub end face coincides with the shoulder of the fillet of shaft, the fatigue limit, σw1, increases with the decrease of fillet radius and with the increase of diameter ratio. (2) Relative slip and the region of fretting corrosion can be decreased with an increase of diameter ratio. (3) Over hanging of the hub over the fillet of shaft can increase σw1, and reduce the region of the occurrence of fretting corrosion.
