Abstract

In a previous paper, the authors investigated the fluctuation of oil film pressure and the vibration of cylinders caused by eccentricity and waviness, using rolling cylinders lubricated with mineral oil. In this paper, the fluctuation of oil film pressure and the vibration of cylinders caused by a periodical change in the width of contact surface have been studied. The width of contact between a plane and a cylinder was varied by partially shaving off the cylinder surface. The fluctuation of oil film pressure and the vibration of cylinders were measured, using an apparatus specially made for this experiment. Then, theoretical values given by numerical calculation were compared with the measured values.
